About Us

Roots & Culture Travel was founded by Pilsen, Chicago artists Andres Contreras and Chelcie S Porter with the mission to provide a unique socially conscious travel experiences that benefits the communities we visit. After the passing of Andres Contreras in 2009 Chelcie began travelling the world to continue this vision. Roots & Culture Travel is now the umbrella for artist residency La Casa de la Artista, Kindred Shop, a collection of locally sourced products made by Chelcie S Porter and artists she meets around the world, as well as Kochia Village Homestay and Volunteer Program in Western Kenya.

The philiosphies of Roots & Culture Travel have been developed from slow travel and first-hand experience. We live with locals. We eat local food, shop at local markets and learn the local languages as best we can.  This is immersion travel at it's finest and a truly unique and positive experience. After 4 years of wellness and holistic training and facilitating retreats around the world we are now offering our services to you ! 

 

We use our local connections to provide travel counsultations focused on socially responsible travel and retreat planning services for groups and solo travellers for the following countries: 

Czech Republic, Thailand, Kenya ,Tanzania, US Virgin Islands , British Virgin Island,Cambodia, India, Sri Lanka & U.S.

                                MENU PLANS FOR ALL DIETS

The better you eat, the better you feel and we are committed to planning a retreat menu for you. We specialize in vegetarian, vegan and plan-based diets. but don't worry we can accomodate food allergies and even add options for the meat eaters in your group. A series of smoothies, vegetable juice shots and herbal healing teas is also available for you and your attendees.  Our local cooks shop daily for the freshest ingredients . Want to eat only traditional foods your entire trip? No problem! We can make sure that you have the richest meny of must -have dishes from that region!

Congratulations! 

We are pleased to announce that Vaughn Anslyn will be the artist leading the 1st phase of our Kenyan Mural Project. Vaughn is a Caribbean artist from St Kitts & Nevis and will be leading a mural project with local youth which will pay tribute to their ancestors and matriarchs of the homestead. 

The goal of this project is to preserve the family lineage of this homestead while increasing the knowledge of the local culture as well as bringing awareness to the issues the Luo tribe faces. 

Our goal is to create a cultural exchange will empowering youth. If you would like to donate to our Kenyan Mural Project please donate below.

 Acclaimed Chicago fit fashionistas and Red Heart Yarn spokeswomen Erika and Monika Simmons of Double Stitch Twins have transformed the crochet world. Their fashions have appeared on TV shows like "The Real" and "The Steve Harvery Show". They are also advocates of a fit lifestyle and teach fitness and healthy eating classes throughout Chicago when they're not traveling with us.  During Travel Therapy Retreats DS Twins offer workshops in crochet, Zumba fitness and healthy eating. Join them for a woman-positive time full of creativity and wellness.

Chelcie S Porter

Founder and director of Travel Therapy Tours, La Casa de la Artista as well as  Kindred Spirt House and Kindred Retail Boutique Chelcie S Porter has always been known as a busy woman. An artist and dancer from childhood she opened her first photogaphy business at 19 and first art gallery at 21 and hasn't stopped since. After the passing of her husband and co-founder Colombian artist Andres Contreras she wa diagnosed with osteoarthritis, and rare auto-immune disease called kikuchi fugimoto in 2010. Already a vegetarian for more than 20 yrs she turned to juicing and reiki to heal herself and began diving even deeper into the world of wellness. She has studied with renowned herbalists and bushmen in the Caribbean and Thailand and has been travelling the world to help others heal since. Chelcie is now a health and wellness and relationship focused life coach, reiki practioner, meditation coach, sex educator and trantra coach and certified herbalist.
